How to Build Seating Walls and Posts on Soil

Installing on Soil for building a base seehowto sheet numbers one twenty and two twenty. When installing Courtyards walls you can buildon existing patios or pavement as well as on soil. The following example shows you howto install a wall and a post on a flat grass covered area. let's begin with the wall panel.Temporarily lay out the first course of blocksthe loion of your wall. This will beyour guide for installing the base. Now use a shovel to cut around the blocks markingwhere the grass and soil will b removed to construct the base. Remove the blocks andset them aside. Then remove the grass and soilthe area marked out. Approximatelyeight inches wide and three inches deep. Next

install the foundation pad. When installingon soil, the base course must be laid on a bed of compacted crushed rock. Place the crusheockthe excavated areas up to grade. Then compact thoroughly with a hand tamper. Usinga level and a two by four, make adjustments to ensure the foundation pad is level. Addor subtract crusted rock as needed. then relevel and adjust as necessary. Once your foundationpad is level, begin the wall panel by placing three of four blocks on the basea patternyou have chosen. Check the blocks for level from front to back and side to side makingadjustments where necessary. For high areas, tamp the block down, for low areas add a littlecrushed rock under the block. Next place a

few blocks on the second course. Always buildthe first and second courses at the same time to ensure that the blocks line properly. Continuebuilding the first and second courses, leveling the first course as you go. Finish your wallby adding additional courses until the desired height is achieved. For tall walls added reinforcementmay be needed, see howto sheet number one fifty for more information Now let's builda courtyard post. Layout the blocks at the loion of your post. Then use a shovel tocut around the blocks marking where the grass and soil will be removed to construct thebase. Remove the blocks and set them aside. then remove the sod and soilthe area markedout. Approximately twentyfour inches square

by four inches deep. Next install the foundationpad. Placed crushed rockthe excavated areas up to grade. Then compact thoroughlywith a hand tamper. Level the foundation padboth directions and make adjustments asnecessary. Start the post by placing the corner blocks with their long sides facing out. Cornerblocks have a long side and a short side. The long sides are always placed to the outsideof the post. Once all the blocks areplace, align them with a square and level making adjustments as necessary. On the secondcourse place the corner blocks so that they overlap the two blocks beneath them. Thispattern will offset the vertical seams. Continue building to the top of your post, alternatingthe first and second course patterns as you

go. Posts must always be built on a good foundation. When you have softer soils or require taller posts, use one of these reinforcement options.See howto sheet number one forty for more information. Now you can build on soil toenhance the design and style of your project. For a complete library of Courtyard HowtoSheets visit us at allanblock .

How to Build a Reinforced Retaining Wall Using Geogrid

Building with Allan Block. In this example we are building a reinforced wall. Using geogrid is the easiest way to add support to a wall. Most geogrids typically comelarge rolls anda variety of strengths. These geogrid types are strongest along the roll or machine direction and are cut to length they are best suited for walls over six feet high. AB Reinforcement Grid is designed for walls up to six feet high. It comes3' and 4' roles and is biaxial which means it has the same strengthboth directions and can be simply rolled out along the wall. AB reinforcement grid will be needed on every other course to the top of the wall when necessary.

Check the approved plans and specifiions for details. Once the base course is completed begin installing the first layer of AB reinforcement grid by placing the edge of the grid against the back of the raised front lip and rolling it out along the wall. Stack the next course of blocks on top of the grid. Running Bond is ideal for offsetting the vertical seams. If running bond is not possible, offset them by at least a quarter of a block

and set them flush against the front edge of the blocks below. Once the second course isplace, sight down the wall line to make sure the wall is straight. Adjust the blocks as necessary. Then pull on the back of the grid to remove any slack. If necessary, stake itplace. Never ive or compact directly on the reinforcement grid. This will damage the grid. Fill the hollow cores and twelve inches behind the block with wall rock. Then backfill behind the wall rock and the entire reinforced zone using approved onsite soils

Use a flat nosed shovel to remove the excess wall rock from the top of the blocks. Then backfill behind the wall rock with onsite soils and rake smooth Run the plate compactor over the top of the blocks to compact the wall rock. Then continue compacting the wall rocka path parallel to the wall, working from the back of the block to the back of the backfill area making a minimum of two passes with a mechanical plate compactor. Remember to keep all heavy equipment at least three feet away from the back of the blocks and always compacteight inch lifts or less

Remove any excess material from the top surface of the blocks by sweeping the block clean with a broom. This prepares a smooth surface for placement of the next course Continue these steps to the top of your wall place the next course of blocks slidingthem into place site down the wall the check foralignment Fill with wall rock and backfill with onsite soils then compact on top of the blocks and behind the wall making a minimum of two passes with a mechanical plate compactor

Then sweep the blocks clean Add AB Reinforcement grid on every other course or as specified on the approved plans. then repeat these steps for anyadditional courses to the top of your wall To enhance your project view the other Building Options or visit us at allanblock .
