Should Short People Take Human Growth Hormone
Ever been used as arm rest by all your friendséYeah. Not fun. But maybe a little human growth hormone could help with that. Hey guys Julia here for DNews I have always said I'm average height, butgrowing up I had oddly tall friends. I wished there was some way to make myself taller.I know I'm about average height for a woman, which is approximately 5'4. But there aresome vertically challenged people who aren't so lucky. Is there something they could doéWell some people take human growth hormone, to build lean body mass or to add a few extrainches to their height.
Human growth hormone is a hormone naturallyproducedhigh amounts during childhood and adolescence, but a study published inThe Journal of al Endocrinology Metabolism found that secretion decreases with age byaround 14% per decade. The hormone is producedthe pituitary gland, loed at the baseof the brain. HGH tells the liver to produce a hormone called insulinlike growth factor1(IGF1).The two hormones work together to tell the bones, muscles, and other tissues to grow. But due to various genetic conditions, likeTurner synome, SHOX deficiency and Noonan synome, some people just don't producethe hormone so they tend to be smaller than
average. But according to one endocrinologist,if they take synthetic human growth hormone, they could gain one to four inches. HGH doesmore than add a few inches, it can even take away fat, according to a study published inthe New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that HGH deficient adults who take thesynthetic hormone gain lean body mass and lose some fat body mass, which is incidentallyone of the reasons athletes dope with it. But some parents are giving the hormone totheir perfectly healthy, but short chilen. Becauseour Western culture, we value tallness.Studies show that taller people are generally more respected and have higher IQs and accordingto several studies publishedthe Journal
of Applied Psychology and another publishedin the Journal of Human Capital, over the course of a lifetime taller folks tend toearn more money. A lot more. According to lead authors of the Applied Psychology study,a tall person will “enjoy literally huneds of thousands of dollars of earnings advantage. But giving your perfectly healthy but shortkid HGH might not be the best idea. First of all, it's pretty expensive; costing asmuch as 50,000 dollars. For spending all that money, it might not even add height to thosewithout a deficiency. Plus, it can cause some very serious health issues. Too much HGH cancause a condition called acromegaly, which
basically causes hands and feet swell, overlypronounced facial features, and excessive sweating. HGH use can also trigger cardiomyopathy, osteoporosis, menstrual irregularities, and impotence according to a study published inthe British Journal of Sports Medicine. And one study publishedthe journal Acta medicaScandinavica found that condition can increase the risk of premature death from heart problems. But still knowing all these risks, people still take HGH for more superficial reasons. So if your kid doesn't have a hormone deficiencyand are thinking of spending upwards of 50,000 dollars to try and boost their height, thinkof all the sideeffects first. Being short
isn't really a health condition and plentyof people wind up just fine looking up at the world. Plus they make good arm rests, apparently. Science Has Bad News for Guys Under 59
What's up guys, for Complex News I'm AlexHudgens. Science is once again officially telling ussomething that we already know greater height confers advantagelife. Aka, short peoplehave a slightly harder life than tall folks. A recent study on military men at Camp Pendletonconfirmed an increased risk of depression for men who are 5'8 or shorter. ValeryKrupnik, the lead ian for the study, told LiveScience that, “When people findthemselves outliers for reasons beyond their control, like physical attributes, they facea challengeaddition to all of the challenges average people face.
For menthe military, being shorter doesn'thelp with the physical demands of beingthe armed forces. However, vertically challengedcivilians have issues, too. The CDC reports that the average height ofan American male is 5'9 and guys who fall under that number are more likely toface setbackscareer prospects and dating partners. Shorter men get teased more oftenand are more likely to struggle with selfesteem issues. al psychologist Daniel Freeman of OxfordUniversity even notes that greater height is associated with a slightly lower risk ofsuicide. A Swedish study publishedthe
American Journal of Psychiatry reports thatsuicide risk ops 9% for every twoinch increaseheight. Professionals across the boardscientificstudy agree that height is associated with various aspects of happiness and success dueto microaggressions that shorter people deal witheveryday life. Freeman also notesthat a person who is 6'0 tall is likely to earn $150,000 more over the course of a30year career than someone who is 5'4 because the taller you are, the more likelyyou'll do better at school and then have career success.
As a funsized person myself, I can tell youthat it is still possible to have career success, dating success, and overall happiness. Selfconfidencedoes not have to be based on your height. But, to be honest, it does get frustrating when youneed someone to get things down for you. Stay strong, shorties. You got this. For allof your pop culture news, subscribe to Complex on YouTube.
